In an effort to improve the health of the local community, a secondary school's sports and fitness facilities are being taken over by a leisure trust.

Accrington Academy, located on Queen's Road West, has a six-lane swimming pool, a gym, studios, a sports hall, outdoor pitches, a 3G pitch, outdoor netball courts, and an indoor climbing wall among its many amenities.

A closure caused by the coronavirus pandemic forced them to close in June, and they have since reopened and are currently open to the public on a pay as you go basis.

The Hyndburn Leisure Trust will take over management of the Academy's sports and fitness facilities in January of next year in an effort to increase the number of people who use the facilities.

Individuals will be able to purchase pay-as-you-go tickets as well as Hyndburn Leisure memberships, which will provide them with discounted access to other sports, fitness, and recreation facilities throughout the borough.

"We are excited to be working in partnership with Hyndburn Leisure to enable more local families and residents to take advantage of the facilities we have to offer here," said James Kerfoot, the school's headteacher.

"When school is not in session, we want to provide a high-quality service to the greater community."

In a statement, Lyndsey Sims, chief executive of the Hyndburn Leisure Trust, said, "We are delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with Accrington Academy to operate their excellent leisure and sports facilities."

"The Leisure Trust is eager to increase the number of people who participate."

Hyndburn council leader Coun Miles Parkinson described the partnership as "fantastic news for the residents of Hyndburn."

"Not only will bathtubs whirlpools result in a more diverse range of facilities being available to people and families, but it will also ensure the long-term viability of our leisure services," he explained.

"Collaborative efforts among organizations are critical to the success of our borough's future."This partnership is a component of the larger leisure transformation project, and it will contribute to the project's goals of improving health and wellbeing, as well as outcomes for all participants."

When Coun Parkinson acknowledged that the announcement of a £10 million leisure scheme for the borough, including the closure of Mercer Hall in Great Harwood and the construction of a new £6 million hub at Wilson's Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors, had received a "mixed reception," he said it was because of the "mixed reception" he had received.
